Maker: Facilities Design Team at Rivian
We were immediately inspired when the announcement of Chairity 2021 was made. It started with a text about participating in what has become the best furniture event of the year. Not more than 5 minutes before I saw a chair that I had considered adopting on the corner of Noe and Clipper Street in San Francisco. I immediately ran back outside and grabbed this chair and started thinking about what it could be, and what stories it could tell.
I began to assemble the team at Rivian to brainstorm some ideas. We knew we wanted to use found materials and upcycle them into the chair. We also wanted to keep everything hyper local. A Taylor Stitch jacket made in San Francisco was used for the fabric. Elliot over at Champion Powder Coating in Bayshore was used for paint. The leather scraps were cobbled together from SH Frank located in the Mission District. The new brass hardware was purchase from Center Hardware… along with a few hundred staples.
It all came together quite nicely. The classic design of the tubular steel makes this piece an easy study. We hope this chair can find a home in the Bay Area and continue to live and be appreciated.
