Hello. Meet Da Capo al Coda. This light, composed from the action of a piano, celebrates the intricate pieces typically hidden from sight. A piano’s action is comprised of metal, wood, and felt in various forms constructed together as simple machines. After deconstructing the action, we divided the pieces amongst our team members. I found myself intrigued and inspired by the various forms and repeating patterns. I decided to distill the pieces down, stripping them of springs, felt pads, and metal tabs, to celebrate their purest state. I then applied a unifying wash of white paint with subtle notes of variation to all the pieces. The construction of the light, with a radial design and layering of materials, gives a nod to the harmonies once played by the pianist when striking the keys.
