One hot summer morning, our job captain Shelia was on her way to work when she spotted an abandoned chair left on the side of the road. Seeing that the chair had too much personality to leave behind, she made room in the back of her car and took it home. This wasn’t her first time collecting items left to be trash. Her love language was creating self-made pieces that would serve a new purpose.
A few months later…
AP+I had been searching and asking the office for any outdated furniture items that could fulfill our spot in the Chairity fundraiser. Shelia knew she had a couple collected items in her shed that could be a potential fit. Later that week, our team took a coffee break to see what options Shelia had brought. As a collective, we were on the look for a piece that had a simple, vintage charm, yet an unassuming character. Together we saw the shy, underestimated chair that Shelia found on the side of the road and knew she was the one. In celebration of her comeback and this year’s Chairity theme, we welcome her: The Flip Side.
Concept
The Flip Side has a deep history that dates back to the 1940s. She was patented as a Leg-O-Matic chair, having the ability to fold into itself due to its sturdy folding mechanism hardware. Our thought process was to preserve the well-made folding mechanism and turn it into an everyday piece: a wall-mounted foldable workstation. We pulled a patterned fabric to create a graphic visual pin board, using the pin board’s cork interior for pinning daily reminders or photos of your family and travels. Vibrant turquoise blue was spray painted to accentuate the metal hardware. Clear acrylic sheets were custom cut for the surface top and back panel to frame the lower half of the workstation, showcasing the structure and chair back when folded up. Slim, handy shelves were installed from remnants of the chair to hold small accessories like an iPhone or notebook. Whether it’s standing and working throughout the day, or perching for a quick call, the Flip Side is easy to close shop. Touch once to fold open, touch once to fold back up.
