Hi there, I'm Meraki

This is my story.

Maker: OpenSquare & Cascade Upholstery

The MAGNIFICENT SEVEN chose to spend time touring 2nd hand stores looking for a forgotten piece and we stumbled upon a very old folding rocking chair at Value Village, with metal details pieces, whose innards include ochre mohair and an exterior of heavy woven pink & green flowers.

We picked her up for $12.99 and she started her adventure to be reborn. We partnered with Cascade Upholstery & Alice who was one of the seven magnificents. We collaborated to determine how she might look reborn and share what fabric options and details (technology/satchel) we already had on hand, during our initial meeting, we chose the new pieces a combination of sassy black & white houndstooth & geometric black, blue & white pieces and determined we would need to paint her prior to her production… this was our next challenge so we reached out to Brad at the paint booth and we couldn’t believe that they had a “BLUE CHAIR” blue glossy paint that was left over from an earlier project.

Tina, our team seamstress, said she could sew a tablet & glasses case out of the orginal fabric and was surprised to find the ochre mohair as a filler. Her name is because MERAKI (may-roc-kee) who wouldn’t pick a name that included rock and it means to do something with SOUL, CREATIVITY and LOVE. When you put “something of yourself” into what you’re doing, whatever it may be. Meraki was reborn!

I was born at OpenSquare & Cascade Upholstery in Seattle, WA. I was listed for auction at Chairity, the annual event where creative volunteers auction off their designs in order to raise money for our community On November 4, 2021, I was purchased at the Chairity auction by Gabrielle G. from Moraga, CA.
